Alfred W. Nielsen, Jr.

Alfred W. Nielsen, Jr., 92, passed away on October 30, 2016 at the Bent County Memorial Nursing Home. Long-time Holbrook Valley resident, farmer and herdsman.
He was born on November 8, 1923 to Alfred & Pauline (Shulz) Nielsen at their family home in Cheraw.

He graduated high school in 1940 from Cheraw Consolidated Schools. He was a member of the U.S. Army during WWII, serving in the European theater and one year in Japan. He was a life-long Methodist, and he served on the official board of the Cheraw Methodist Church for many years. He was elected to the Holbrook Irrigation District board of directors and served as secretary for 12 years. He served on the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service board. He helped organize the East End Water and Pipeline Company to bring water to the homes of all members. He served on the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Valley Cooperative Assn. for several years. He was a founding member of the South East Colorado Angus Association. In 1974 he was elected to serve on the Cheraw School Board. Alfred was also a long-time member of the Cheraw Lions.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene Heatwole Nielsen; son, Ross (Darrin) Nielsen; daughters, Alane (Bill) Sheaves and Dianne (Bob) Rizzuto; sister, Edith Glinski; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and numerous much-loved nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Don and Erwin Nielsen.

A Celebration of Alfred’s Life will be held at the Cheraw United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Susie Burley officiating.
