Alice Estella “Stella” Harrington, 94, went peacefully to be with her Lord, on October 25, 2011.
Stella was born in Eddyville, Iowa on December 18, 1916 to the union of Charles C. & Mary Alice (Gallagher) Carson. She was the last surviving grandchild of Kit Carson, the Famous Frontiersman.
Stella married W. H. “Jake” Harrington in La Junta, Colorado on June 2, 1938. They made their home and raised their family, South of La Junta in the Higbee area. Ranching and farming was their way of life.
Stella found her greatest joy in serving her Lord and Savior. Her love for her family was constantly evident. She could be found at many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s 4-H activities, sporting events or rodeo activities. She counted her many friends and neighbors among her greatest blessings. You could often find Stella in her garden tending the many flowers she grew, and reading was a favorite pastime of hers.
Stella served as a cook for many years at Camp Salvation near Monument Lake, Colorado. Always active, she also helped as children’s leader for the La Junta Bible Study Fellowship. She was a 4-H leader for the Villagreen 4-H club, a member of both the Colorado Cowbells and the Higbee Get Together Club. She was instrumental in maintaining the Higbee Cemetery, and was honored to be chosen as the 2002 Silver Queen for the Trinidad Roundup.
Stella is survived by her daughters, Mary Ann (Tom) Allsworth of La Junta, CO, Peggy (Jack) Noe of Kim, CO, Janet (John) Marroney of Kim, CO; grandchildren, Veann (Roney) Clark of Morse, TX, Sue (Robert) Etbauer of Goodwell, OK, Rod (Luann) Allsworth of La Junta, CO, Jo Beth (J.A.) Waters of Meade, KS, Ross (Mandy) Allsworth of La Junta, CO, Norman (Shelly) Noe of La Junta, CO, Jake (Stacy) Noe of Cheyenne Wells, CO, Caryl (Ron) Pearce of Cheraw, CO, Sheryl (Shawn) Wahlert of La Junta, CO, Kirk (Elisabeth) Noe of La Junta, CO, Sharon (Jim) Malott of Sugarland, TX, Jill Van Ness of Liberty, MO, Jacob (Deirdre) Marroney of West Palm, FL, 35 great-grandchildren, 11 great, great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws, Lee Carson and Ikey Ethridge both of La Junta, CO; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of dear friends and acquaintances.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years W.H. “Jake” Harrington, parents, Charles and Mary Alice Carson; brothers, Jess, Kit Edward and William Carson; sister; Anna Lange; sister-in-laws; Alice, Mae, and Leota Carson; brother -in-laws, William Lange, Hoot Harrington and Jack Harrington; father and mother-in-law, Herman and Anna Harrington.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 31st at 10:00 a.m., at the First Church of the Nazarene in La Junta, CO with Pastor Maynard Bowen of the Prairie Bible Chapel officiating. Interment will follow at the Higbee Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, October 30, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel.
