Buddy L. Mayo, Sr.

February 3, 1920 — October 29, 2011

Buddy Laverl Mayo was born Feb 3, 1920 in Beaver, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of nine children born to George Richard Mayo and Hattie Almeda Graham Mayo. He passed away October, 29, 2011 at the age of 91, at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center Nursing Care Center in La Junta, Colorado. At the age of 3 months, he rode on a pillow in a spring seat wagon to his new home in Colorado. His father purchased a farm and ranch consisting of 320 acres which was located about 20 miles northeast of Kim.

Buddy attended Lowry School through the eighth grade then he attended high school in Kim. While at Kim he met Eileen Mayfield.

On July 25, 1938, Buddy and Anna “Eileen” Mayfield were married in Trinidad, CO. He made a living breaking horses, cutting broom corn and working for anyone who needed help. They had two girls, Joanne and Carolyn. Buddy’s life changed drastically on January 27, 1944. Eileen passed away after a short illness.

Buddy loved to rope calves. Along with his roping horse, Peanuts, he attended many rodeos. He was a member of the Pritchett Roping Club.

After Joanne and Carolyn graduated from Kim high School, Buddy sold the place and moved to Lamar where he worked as yard manager at the sale barn for the Hallock family. He married Opal Page February 29, 1960 in Eads, CO, They had one son Buddy Mayo Jr.

Buddy and Opal moved to Potwin, KS in 1962 where Buddy was yard manager at the Circle E Ranch Feedlot. They bought a small farm and ranch near Peabody, Kansas. In 1984 Buddy retired from the feedlot, but continued working on their farm until 1999. They sold the farm and moved to Rocky Ford, Colorado to be closer to their family.

Buddy had a stroke in July 2006, Buddy and Opal moved into the Arkansas Valley Nursing Care Center. December 20, 2007, Opal passed away. Buddy resided at the care center until his death.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, George and Almeda Mayo; brothers, Lester, Harvey and Earl Mayo; sisters, Sylvia Dick, Eunice White, Jessie Mayo, Bessie Porter, and Nellie Slavens; two grandson, Mark Goodrich and Doherty baby boy.

Survivors include daughters, Joanne and Leland Goodrich of Pritchett, CO, Carolyn and John Doherty of Branson, CO and son, Buddy Jr. and Kathy of Garden City, KS. Also surviving are grandchildren, Dianne (Cody) Clark, Denise (Eldon) Morlan, Lea Goodrich, Lynda Goodrich, Joe (Lisa) Doherty, Audrey Mayo, Dustian Mayo, Bradley (Liz) Mayo, and two of Opal’s grandchildren Cody & Monte Mayo who lived with them for several years. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great, great-grandchild

Graveside services will be Friday, November 4, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Kim Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, November 3, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel.
