Evelyn Mccloy

August 25, 1929 — November 3, 2012

Evelyn Miller McCloy, 83, passed away November 3, 2012 at her La Junta home surounded by her family. Evelyn was born August 25, 1929 to Grady and Beulah Miller in Thurber, Texas.  She was their fourth child and always known as “Sis” to her sister and brothers.  Evelyn graduated from Huckabay high school in 1947.  She then attended North Texas State Teachers College in Denton, Texas, now known as North Texas State University.  She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1950.  Evelyn traveled to Morse, Texas to teach elementary school.  While in Morse, Evelyn lived with the H.B. and Laverne Parks family.  This family became a loving addition to Evelyn’s life.  After teaching in Morse for several years, Evelyn married Carson McCloy, a local farmer/rancher on June 19, 1954.  They moved to the family farm.  While living and working there two children were born to the couple, Clyde and Reba.   In the summer of 1960, Evelyn and Carson moved to a ranch in the Higbee Valley south of La Junta, Colorado.  Soon a third child, Leah, joined the family. Evelyn thrived as a rancher’s wife.  She fed countless meals to ranch hands being known to serve delicious pies.  Evelyn was willing to help Carson with any chore that needed to be done on the ranch.  She was that extra set of hands that make a ranch successful.  Many children from the Higbee area in 1960s and 1970s remember Evelyn as a 4H leader.  In 2008, Evelyn and Carson moved to Casa Del Sol retirement community in La Junta, Colorado.

Evelyn was a member of the First United Methodist Church in La Junta and attended services at the Cowboy Church in La Junta.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Grady Miller and Dr. James W. Miller and wife Nita Miller.

Evelyn is survived by her husband Carson of their home in La Junta; three children—Clyde (Connie) McCloy of Morse, Texas, Reba Hoskins of La Junta, and Leah (Tommy) Severson of La Junta;  eleven grandchildren—Jimmilee McCloy of Amarillo, Texas, Eva McCloy of Stephenville, Texas, Wil and Conner McCloy of Morse, Texas, Levi Hoskins of Swink, CO, Lacie(Edward)  Mayhoffer of La Junta, CO, Lexie (Cody)  Kurtz of Rocky Ford, Woo Chul Han McCloy of South Korea  and Carson , Cullen, and Carter Severson of La Junta and one precious great-grandchild Briley Mayhoffer  of La Junta.  Evelyn is also survived by one sister, Leona Roberts of Stephenville, Texas and one sister-in-law, Mary Miller of Fort Hancock, Texas along with many nieces and nephews. Evelyn’s greatest wish was that everyone come to know her Savior.
