Frances Shasteen

Frances True Meyers Shasteen, 103, lifetime La Junta resident, passed away in her sleep on Thursday, December 31, 2009, at the Arkansas Valley Regional Nursing Care Center. Visitation will be Friday, January 8, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Peacock Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 8th at the First Christian Church with Reverend Ron Skorick officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery.
She was born on July 30, 1906 to William Frederick & Gretchen Johanna (Emmius) Meyers in La Junta, Colorado.
Frances was a 1951 graduate of Colorado State Colleges in Greeley received her Masters Degree and attended Adams State Teachers College.
Frances was a retired school teacher and newspaper circulation manager. She taught elementary schools for 37 ½ years, including 6 ½ years at Kim, Fairview, Higbee, and Timpas, concluding with 31 years in La Junta Elementary and Junior High schools retiring in 1971. She managed the circulation department for the La Junta Tribune Democrat for 14 years from 1971 until March 1985. She received the Sunshine Award in 1990 as “One of La Junta’s Premier Gardner’s” in recognition of her flower and vegetable garden at 10th and Carson Avenue. She was a member of the Arkansas Valley Retired School Employees Association, Colorado RSEA, Retired Teachers Division of AARP and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Frances is survived by her son, Don (Shirley) Shasteen of Potomac, MD; four grandchildren, Air Force Brig General, Jon R. Shasteen of Key Largo, FL; Ron W. Shasteen of Potomac, MD; Frances Pauline Nutty of Phoenix, AZ; Sherilyn Sue Kosman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Lauren & Donovan Kosman and Jessica & Lee Nutty. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Gretchen Joan Shasteen-Nell, sisters, Pauline & Margueriete; infant brother, Leland Stanford Meyers.
Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home & Arkansas Valley Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
