Hazel K. Rhodes

Hazel K. Schertz Rhodes of La Junta died peacefully in her home at Casa del Sol on April 28, 2009 at the age of 100. She was born June 11, 1908 to William and Magdalena Schertz in Manson, Iowa. She came to La Junta for nurses training, graduating from the La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing in 1930. On December 11, 1932 she married Marvin D. Rhodes of La Junta. They farmed in the Fairmount area South of Swink for many years before retiring to La Junta. After Marvin’s death in 1993, Hazel moved to the Casa del Sol Retirement Community. In addition to working as a nurse, Hazel was an avid quilter, active in the local Mennonite Church and Hospital Auxiliary. She and Marvin traveled extensively and volunteered many hours to deliver “Meals on Wheels”.She is survived by her three daughters: Nelda (Bob) Thelin, Irene Rhodes, and Marva (Claude) Kremer; four grandchildren, Doug (Karen) Kremer, Dana (Andrew Whalen) Kremer, Rachel (Sanjay Jivraj) Thelin, and Ruth (Bill Daugherty) Thelin; four great­-grandchildren, Brandon Kremer, MacKenzie Kremer, Nikhil Jivraj and Ronak Jivraj; She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters and brothers.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Mennonite Church at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2009. Inurnment will take place with a private service at Fairview Cemetery in La Junta.
