Irene M. Gleason, 92, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2011, in Peoria, AZ. She was born on November 2, 1918 to Joseph & Ottilia (Staab) Schmidt in Hays, KS. Irene grew up in Spearville, KS and graduated from Spearville High School. She married Francis Patrick Gleason on August 16, 1938. After his death, Irene made her home in La Junta, CO where she worked for over 20 years as a grocery clerk for Kippers Grocery Store.
She was a devoted member of Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish, Marion Coterie Circle, Catholic Daughters of America and the La Junta Senior Citizens Center. Irene loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and attending their many activities and sporting events. Her family and friends were most often found sitting at her table and could always count on her delicious homemade sweet rolls or a good meal.
She is survived by her children, Jim (Julie) Gleason of Cheraw, CO; Dan (Loretta) Gleason of Sun City West, AZ; Robert (Teri) Gleason of La Junta, CO; sisters, Tillie Peintner of St. John, KS; JoAnn (Bob) Hough of Tucson, AZ; sister-in-law, Joyce Schmidt of Las Vegas, NV; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Irene is preceded in death by her parents Joseph & Ottilia Schmidt; husband, Francis Patrick Gleason; daughter & son-in-law, Patricia (Larry) Miller; sister, Sister M. Jemma (Louise) Schmidt; brothers, Edward & Robert Schmidt; grandsons, Patrick & Michael Gleason.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Friday, April 8, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel. Memorial Mass will be Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish.
