Joe Vernon Buckhaults, 88, of La Junta, passed away on Monday, March 7, 2011 at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center.
Joe was born to Joe Wallace & Viva (Thomason) Buckhaults on March 19, 1922 in Perryton, Texas. Joe married Virginia Carol Barker in February of 1942. She preceded him in death on Oct. 22, 2001.
Joe attended elementary school in Farmworth, Texas and graduated on May 22, 1940 from Perryton High School. In the fall he moved to Wichita, Kansas. In 1947 Joe & Virginia purchased a ranch in Lincoln County near Karvel, Colorado. In 1999 they sold their ranch and moved to La Junta.
Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing and also playing cards and dancing. In 2002 Joe started attending the dances at the La Junta Senior Center where he made many friends and was where he met Betty Hall on May 3, 2002 on her 73rd birthday, they started dating on the second weekend in September, which was Early Settler’s weekend. Joe & Betty were married on July 19, 2003 at the Nazarene Church in Las Animas. Betty’s two sons escorted their mom to the alter, where Reverend Peter Wybenga asked “who gives this woman to Joe?” Tom, Jr. responded “we do to Joe’s loving care.” Their reception was held at the The Bent’s Fort Inn with many of their friends and family attending.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of the La Junta home; son, Texas D. (Patricia Ann) Buckhaults; daughter-in-law, Patricia Jean; grandchildren, Joe Randall (Shirley) Buckhaults, Ross Evan (Dedee) Buckhaults, Kay Jean (Bradley) Grote, Texas Don (Dollee) Buckhaults, Daryl Oren (Kathleen) Buckhaults, and Dale Chris (Ginger) Buckhaults; step-children, Tom Hall, Jr., Anna Hall and Ed Hall.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joe W. & Viva Buckhaults; first wife, Virginia, and son, Joe Wayne Buckhaults in 2004.
Funeral service will be Friday, March 11, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., at Peacock Memorial Chapel with Reverend Rick Miller of the Saint Peters Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be Friday, March 11th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel.
