John A. Mestas, Sr.

February 19, 1929 — October 3, 2020

John A. Mestas, Sr., 91, longtime La Junta resident passed away October 3, 2020 at the Bent County Healthcare Center in Las Animas. He was born on February 19, 1929 to Eleanor (Mascarenas) Rivera. He married Annie Miller; she preceded him in death on June 23, 2014.

He attended elementary and high school at the Colorado Deaf & Blind School in Colorado Springs. He graduated with the class of 1949. During his high school years he enjoyed playing football. He worked and retired from the Pueblo Army Depot after 24 years. After his retirement he worked at Nibco and Western Foods in La Junta.

He received many motorcycling awards, plaques, trophies, certificates and patches. He owned and rode Harley-Davidson Motorcycles for over 60 years and thoroughly enjoyed touring the country with my mom from coast to coast. He also enjoyed woodworking, making clocks, and carving furniture and airplanes out of wood, putting model airplanes together. He was a huge Military buff and enjoyed reading and watching military/war history. What he enjoyed the most was taking the family on their yearly family vacation every summer. He enjoyed roller skating with Annie in their high school days.

He is survived by his children, John A. (Kathy) Mestas, II of La Junta; Diane (George) Homm of Burlington, CO; grandchildren, Samuel Mestas, Jillian Stoker, Joshua (Nichole) Stoker, Jennifer (Ross) Netherton, Natasha Osbern, Shannon Romero, Nathan, Josiah, Collen and Melanie all of Burlington, CO; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Ralph (Clara) Mestas of Denver; Candi Valdez of Florida and Thomas Mestas. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Annie on June 23, 2014; children, James and Debbie Mestas; brothers, George, Charlie, Robert and Toby Mestas; sisters, Theresa and Esther and grandson, Caleb Medley.

Funeral service will be Saturday, October 17, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at the Upper Room Fellowship with Pastor Paul Simon of the Upper Room Fellowship officiating. Visitation will be held prior to service from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Higbee Cemetery in Higbee.
