John A. Tilton

September 3, 1932 — February 17, 2010

John Albert Tilton, 77, went home peacefully with family and friends by his side on Feb. 17, 2010.
Born Sept. 3, 1932 in Boone, CO to Bert and Viola Tilton who preceded him in death. Also, preceding him in death: son Richard, siblings Darrel, Ray, David, Edith. Graduated from Boone High School participated in football, Golden Gloves Boxing. He was a cowboy/rancher in Orchard Park, and computer programmer at the Pueblo Army Depot until retirement in 76. He served as a civilian with the Department of Defense in Vietnam 1968/69.
Following retirement, he managed a propane company, worked at the Colorado Boys Ranch, and did substitute teaching in La Junta. He volunteered at Bent's Old Fort, Casa Del Sol, Otero Museum, La Junta Community Garden and was a member of the Autobee Club, Audubon and Ornithological Societies. Attended Boone Baptist Church for many years before moving to La Junta where he became a member of Emmanuel Mennonite Church. John spent a lifetime learning. He was a historian and avid birder and he loved to share his knowledge.
He is survived by his wife Judy, sister Thelma Barber and children: Gail (Steve) Swistak, Sherry (Calvin) Taylor, Jenny (Ed) Thomas, Bart (Cheryl) Tilton, Lori (John) Pruitt, Paul (Gloria) Tilton, Joann (Mike) Rodriguez, Rexella (Jim) Day, Dianna (Chris) Morefield, 27 wonderful grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and many other special family members and friends.
At his request cremation has taken place. A private family ceremony will be held at St. Vrain Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 22, 2010 at the Emmanuel Mennonite Church, 502 Harriett Ave. La Junta.
Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home & Arkansas Valley Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

In honor of John, those who desire may make memorials to the Otero Museum Association or the Autobee Scholarship Fund.
