Lorna Ann Malott

December 1, 1925 — April 20, 2011

Lorna Ann Malott, an Arkansas Valley resident for more than 50 years, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011 in La Junta. She was 85.

Ms. Malott was born December 1, 1925 to Stanley and Stella Prochaska on a farm seven miles outside Crete, Nebraska. Her life was a testament to the fierce independence, hard work, and resolute perseverance that drives the American dream. Ms. Malott broke through the “glass ceiling” before the term existed, working her way from processing sugar beets on campaign lines to the corporate offices during a distinguished 40-year career with American Crystal Sugar. She was quick to tell those close to her of her friendship. Ms. Malott also had a deep respect for the people she was fortunate enough to work beside, this was one of the highlights of her career.

She enjoyed travel, golf, bowling, cards (particularly when she beat her grandchildren), Scrabble, Toastmasters, and watching NBA basketball — especially when Kobe Bryant lost. She loathed losing, laziness, and people who hit a sofI-17 when the dealer had a six showing.

Ms. Malott is survived by her brother, Fritz Prochaska, four children, Catherine Montini, Bill Donnell, David Donnell, and Tom Malott, 12 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Jim Donnell (1980), husband, Blaine Malott (1986), brother, John, and sisters, Alberta Silva (1987) and Velma Ingram (2010).

A graveside service will be held at the Rocky Ford Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 with Pastor Ed Kite officiating.

Those wishing to do so may make memorial contributions to Inspiration Field, Arkansas Valley Community Center, P.O. Box 1130, La Junta, CO, 81050 direct or through the funeral home.
