Marguerite L. Phelps

Marguerite L. Phelps, 87, of Laguna Niguel, California former La Junta resident, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2009.
She was born to Cosme H. & Apolonia R. Lopez on March 8, 1922 in La Junta, Colorado. She married Captain William R. Phelps, an Air Force Pilot who preceded her in death at a young age.
Marguerite worked as a legal secretary prior to her marriage. She also worked as a hospital operating room secretary in Riverside, California for over 22 years. Her true joy’s in life were her marriage, her children, grandchildren and extended family. She will always be remembered for her loving devotion to her family, her unbounded generosity to all, and her compassion for others. We will miss her as a person who wove the thread that kept our families connected, with a feisty spirit.
She is survived by her daughters, Carol Simmons of Grant’s Pass, Oregon; Billie M. Phelps, M.D. of Pacific Palisades; grandchildren, Jennifer Miller, Eric Harris, Tracy Harris, David Hansen, and Nicole Hansen; great-grandchildren, Ian, Shane, and Shannon Bauman, Erin, Alyssa, and Ryan Harris, Aurora Harris-Evanoff; seven siblings survive including Chris A. (Pauline) Lopez of La Junta.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents, Cosme H. & Apolonia R. Lopez; husband, Captain William R. Phelps; brother, Edward Lopez; sisters, Helen Cortinaz & Rita Dundas; niece, Cindy Lopez.
Graveside service will be held on Friday, October 2, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Fairview Cemetery with Father Alphonsus Ihuoma of Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish officiating.
