Melodene Everett

Melodene “Nanny” Everett, 94, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2012 at her La Junta home. She was born on October 21, 1917, in Ardmore, Oklahoma to Eugene L. & Gertrude (Newberry) Powell. She married Gregory Everett in Las Animas in 1937; he preceded her in death on March 23, 1993.
Melodene owned her own Beauty Shop for many years. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in La Junta. She was a life member with the Eastern Star, Columbine Grand Chapter, Radiant Chapter No. 10 in Pueblo, CO, and a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, La Junta Chapter.
Nanny was a loving and generous person who loved to spend time with her family and friends, and she always gave good advice to those who listened. She loved to cook and took the sincere time to take care of her family. Nanny has found her way back to be with her loving husband Gregory. Nanny was very much loved and will be missed by many.

She is survived by her great nephew, Kevin E. Keith; great nieces, Delores M. Hicks, Laura Vasquez; great nephews, Andre King, Stephen Grajeda and Anthony Grajeda; great niece, Paula Grajeda; great nephew, Carlette King; and great niece, Chan-tell Beckwith, she was survived by numerous great, great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband.

Funeral services will be Monday, June 18, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at the Peacock Memorial Chapel with Reverend J.O. Stephen officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 17, 2012 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
