Neva Jean Herrell

Neva Jean (Amidon) Herrell passed away on the morning of February 19, 2020, with her son Jim and daughter in-law Kendra at her side. Neva was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on June 18, 1924. She was the daughter of Edward Carlisle and Ester Helen (Keys) Amidon. Neva went to work after graduating from Wyandot County High School for a large optometry practice there in Kansas City.

Neva was always a part of the Methodist Church family where ever she set up her home. She loved to play and sing from the old Methodist Hymnal. With her love of music and her Methodist family, Mrs. Herrell was a joy to know. She also didn’t seem to remember others shortcomings, which is always refreshing.

A recent highlight in Neva Jean’s life was being acknowledged at The La Junta Wake-Up Breakfast by Ron Davis and Jim Sisson, for her community involvement. Her son Jim kept his mom and the room amused with anecdotes of Neva’s life.

Mrs. Herrell is preceded in death by her parents, “Curlie” and Ester, her husband, Dr. Robert Gene Herrell, his parents, Gus and Helen, his sisters, Floy and Virginia, and their husbands, Beck and Art. Neva is survived by her two sons, Jim and Kim, five grandchildren, Dänya, Kate, Audrey, Jaime, and Ross, five nieces and nephews, Alan with Sandy, Terry with Linda, Sandie with Steve, Micki, and Win with Jon. and their clans. She is also remembered with so many of her friends and neighbors whom she loved, Ross and Francis, Bill and Roma, Fran and Velma, and Faith Vincent.

Neva Jean’s sons and daughter in-laws would like to express their heart felt thanks to the Crowley County Nursing Center and Kay Williams with Sangre de Cristo Hospice for their care and kindness of their mother.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel officiated by Neva’s son, Kim. Visitation will be Friday, February 28, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel.
