Pedro A. Madrid, 57, of La Junta passed away too soon from us on December 12, 2020 at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center, from complications from COVID-19. He was born on May 21, 1963 in La Junta to Ramona Madrid.

Pedro was a loving husband to Tonilyn for 38 years. He cherished his two children, Joey(36) and Alyse (33). His grandkids, Aliya-Myah (7), Chloe (5), and Caesar (4), were his world and they loved their PaPa and the fun times they had every summer in the pool. Family was the most sacred of institutions for Pedro. He was the youngest of 7 children. His brothers and sisters include, Robert “Buff”, Arlene, Larry “Flaco”, Rosalie, Debra “Bimbo”, and Pana.

Pedro spent 16 years as a teacher’s aide in special education at La Junta Middle School. He was also a Title One Teacher at Las Animas Elementary from 2005-2008. His passion was always helping special needs children. He also spent a couple years as an online teacher with AIM Academy before retiring.

During his life he enjoyed participating in many sports. From wrestling and basketball, to fast pitch softball and horseshoes. However, his favorite sport, by far, was football.
Pedro played football most of his life. He began coaching youth flag football back in 1984. He spent 21 years coaching La Junta High School football and 2 years as head coach for Las Animas High School football and assisted there for one season. It’s fair to say he was an avid football fan. He also loved wrestling and assisted John Haberman from 1994 to 2004 . After retiring from coaching, he could be found blowing the whistle at many of the Tiger football home games. One of the highlights of his life was watching the La Junta Tigers win the State Championship in football. Anyone who knew him, knew his love of the Denver Broncos ran deep. He was an undying fan of the Broncos no matter how the season ended.

Pedro was a great friend to so many. He never met a person he didn’t call friend. He cherished so many long time friendships, many of which he called family.

Pedro Madrid definitely left his mark on those who knew him. He was a fun-loving jokester and he will surely be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Tonilyn of the La Junta home; children, Joey (Bri Kyle) Madrid of Broomfield, CO; Alyse Madrid of Colorado Springs; grandchildren, Aliya-Myah, Chloe and Caesar Williams; siblings, Pana Madrid of Thornton, CO; Arlene Madrid of Longmont, CO; Rosalie Madrid of Brush, CO and Robert “Buff” (Mona) Madrid of Colorado Springs; numerous nieces & nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his mother; brother, Larry “Flaco” Madrid; sister, Debra “Bimbo” Madrid; grandparents that raised him, Eustacia (Fidel) Madrid.

As per Pedro’s request cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later date.
