Sharon Elaine Johnson

Sharon Elaine Johnson, 85, passed away on April 12, 2020 at her La Junta home. She was born on January 30, 1935 in Vernal, Utah to Joseph Claude & Esther Marvella (Baker) Hall. She married James J. Johnson on September 27, 1953 in Craig, Colorado; he preceded her in death on December 19, 1994.

After graduating from high school in 1953, she married James Johnson. They met while he was her bus driver while in high school. They settled in Craig, CO and began family life with the birth of her first son. Five other children were eventually added. Her life centered around her family and church.

She was heavily involved with the Boy Scouts of America, earning the prestigious Silver Beaver Award in 1984. She was named a Koshare Key Leader and served as the Head Chief Mother twice during the years of 1982 and again in 1986.

She also worked with Cub Scouts for many years. Several generations of La Junta young men can claim to have been one of her Cub Scouts. She always said working with the kids kept her young.

She worked with the Girl Scouts of America while her daughter was a member of that organization. Along with scouting, she was active in 4-H and her church; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As well as many local clubs and organizations. She was active in TOPS for several years and served as president of her local chapter for most of her tenure.
After she raised her children and 100’s of cub scouts, she was the Koshare Kiva Librarian for many years. Then she went to work in the fabric department of Wal-Mart often saying she was her own best customer.

She is survived by her children, James N. (Louise) Johnson of Cimarron, NM; Stephen M. Johnson of La Junta; Ret. Col. David L. (Susan) Johnson of Forest City, NC; Thomas V. (Cindy Wilemon) Johnson of Pagosa Springs, CO; Kenneth R. (Nanette) Johnson of Tucson, AZ; Sharon K. (Galen) Phillips of Cheraw; grandchildren, Jessica (John Allen) Sanchez, Steven (Kaycee) Sandoval, Michael Johnson, Tracy (Scott) Gunderson, Matthew (Killashandra) Johnson, Adam, Paul and Sarah Johnson, Jason and David Pearson; great-grandchildren, Alisha (Aquilino Valdez) Sanchez, LenniRay Sandoval, Aden Sandoval, Bryden Schmelzer, Karigan Johnson, Chloe Noel Johnson, Adam Davis, Annabelle Pearson, Audrey Pearson and Lacie Pearson; great, great-grandchildren, Aquilino Zachery, Ariana & Xavier Valdez; siblings, Shirley (Curtis) Zabel of Steamboat Springs, CO; Starlyn (Edwin) Hinkle of Dinosaur, CO; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Richard Joe Hall and Robert Melvin Hall and grandson, Robert Pearson, III.

Graveside service will be held on Friday 17, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery with Bishop Jared Efrid of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, April 17, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel.
