Silfred Manuel Torres, Sr., 79, of La Junta passed away on August 23, 2013 at the Parkview Medical Center. He was born on October 19, 1933 at home in Kim, Colorado to Juan Delfino & Manuelita (Jacques) Torres. He married Alice Martinez of August 26, 1961 in La Junta; she preceded him in death on December 4, 2011. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2011.
Silfred was a rancher/farmer and that was what he loved doing. He worked at the Gallegher Ranch, Red Rock Ranch and Lawson Ranch. He later worked at W&W Feeds in La Junta when he moved to La Junta. If you ever had a question about cattle, fencing, branding, or any other ranch business, he would tell you how he would do it.
Silfred was known by many as Gramps, Gus, Silvy or Mr. Torres. He had many friends and he could tell you their family tree by memory. He always has a story to tell you and he made sure he told you everything about it. He loved his great-grandbabies, he couldn’t wait until they came to see him, and they always made his day.
He is survived by his daughter, Bobbie (Donovan) Kirkpatrick of Longview, WA; sons, Martin Torres of La Junta, Ricky Torres of Kim, CO; granddaughter, Natasha Vermette of La Junta; great-granddaughters, LaTeasha & Taja Vermette; brothers, John (Lucy) Torres of Pueblo, Andrew (Rosie) Torres of Fountain, CO, Bert (Judy) Torres of Kim, CO, Solomon Torres of Brighton, CO, Ben Torres of Kim, CO, and sisters, Orlinda (Joe) Freyta of Bennett, CO, Cordilia (Benjie) Montoya of Fountain, CO and many nieces & nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Frank & Henry Torres, and sister, Vangie Sowders.
Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home & Arkansas Valley Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Friday, August 30, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. and Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m., both services will be at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish with Father Alphonsus Ihuoma officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
