Zona Rae Markus

Zona Rae Markus, 66, passed away on August 29, 2021 at her Sugar City home. She was born on January 20, 1955 in Hugoton, Kansas to Wilburt & Glennis Louise (Stewart) Nachtigal.

She lived most of her life in Colorado, and had some time of her life spent in Kansas. She worked for a brief time at the state hospital in Fort Lyons, CO. Zona had one daughter that she raised by herself in Sugar City, CO. During her life, Zona enjoyed her family and nature. Often, she would watch birds around her house and other animals in the yard. Zona loved helping people. She participated in being a 4-H leader, an Auxiliary member of the VFW, a member of TOPS, and a member of the Lions Club. She volunteered with the church when she could and loved to talk with everyone in the community. Zona made many friends in the community and loved every one of them. Zona found new love when she met her grandson for the very first time. They shared a loving bond of being best friends. Zona loved volunteering to help her friends in the community whenever they needed her, and her heart was full of love for them. Zona loved Crowley County and was very proud to be from a smaller, more intimate place where people know one another and are involved with each other.
She is survived by her daughter, Scarlett Markus; grandson, Roman Markus; sister, Christine Stamp; great-uncle, Gary Stewart. She was preceded in death by her father, Wilburt Nachtigal; mother, Glennis Leslie; infant son, William Markus; brother, Ansel Thomas Harris.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ordway Baptist Church with Pastor Don Parker officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Lakeview Cemetery in Sugar City.
