Alfred “Al” Ray Zumwalt, 81, of Swink, Colorado passed away December 30, 2024, at his Swink home. He was born August 6, 1943, in Lufkin, Texas to Frank & Corrine (Stele) Zumwalt. In 1963, he married Janice Jones in La Junta, Colorado. Alfred and Janice were married for forty-five years with three children Christy, Tyler and Kevin until her passing in 2008.
Al worked various jobs including working at a cemetery and western foods until he ended up working for the sheriff’s office. Al worked at the sheriff’s office from 1963 to 1976 and then became an undersheriff from 1969 to 1976 followed by a police chief of the fowler police department from 1976 to 1979 leading up to working at Otero Junior College from 1980 to 2008.
Alfred is survived by his son, Kevin Zumwalt; grandsons, Jarred, Noah and Connor Zumwalt; great grandson, Abel Zumwalt; brother Billy Zumwalt; sister, France Zumwalt and son-in-law, Larry Vitzum.
Alfred is preceded in death by his wife, Janice; parents, Frank and Corrine Zumwalt; daughter, Christy Vitzum; grandson, Tyler Vitzum; daughter-in-law, Carrie Zumwalt.
A graveside service will be held on July 11, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery followed by a dinner reception at Felicia’s restaurant located in La Junta, Colorado.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Alfred’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
