La Junta, Colorado

Listen to Obituary

Elizabeth A. Daughtrey, 68, of La Junta, Colorado passed away on January 26, 2026, in her La Junta Home. She was born on March 14, 1957, in Long Beach, California as the only child to Wallace & Faye (Sanders) Moon. Elizabeth married Gary Lee Daughtrey May 2nd, 1989, and, in this union, had four children; Aaron, Kristopher, Jessica and Nellie; he is preceded her in death on April 13, 2023

In her early life Elizabeth lost her mother but was delighted when her father decided to remarry to Darlene Peterson Kettenring Moon. This union brought siblings into her home and a love she treasured. It's not often that when two families merge that such a strong bond is formed between stepchildren and stepsiblings, but it did and these ties remained long after Wally's passing. Darlene was her mother in every sense of the word, because in her heart she felt that she was meant to be her mother, that God had made them an eternal family.

After many moves around and a baby boy Kristopher, her treasured son, Elizabeth and Gary made their home in Colorado. After trying for many years and many losses they realized that adoption would give her the large family that she dreamed of after growing up as an only child for so long. First, she found Aaron and Jessica in 1999 on a news segment and then Nellie followed shortly after in 2000. This completed her home and she set about raising her children, maintaining her home and teaching music to any child who wanted to learn, often paying for their instruments out of her own money when it was an obstacle. Our home was filled with the screeches of a child learning how to hold a bow and her gentle instructions turning screeching into the music she wanted to see fill the world. When she moved to a small town with no community orchestra, she created one on her own, setting up practices and finding people with hidden talents who needed an outlet for their creativity but didn't have one. Playing for senior citizens in nursing homes and multiple events. doing all of the work without asking for anything just so people could experience the beauty of live music.

Elizabeth was a devoted grandmother; she loved caring and raising her grandchildren of which she had many. She was so proud of her family, often talking to absolutely anyone who would listen of the accomplishments of not only her children but her grandchildren. She actively participated in her Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Holding many callings, but the one she loved the most was directing the music every Sunday rain or shine.

Elizabeth passed surrounded by many of her grandchildren and her youngest daughter, exactly where she would have wanted to be in her home.

Elizabeth is survived by her children, Aaron (Gigi) Daughtrey of Fort Lyon, Colorado, Kristopher “Kris” (Beth) Daughtrey of La Junta, Colorado, Jessica (Devon) Tuska of Onley Springs, Colorado and Nellie (Rodney “Joseph”) Valencia of La Junta, Colorado; Thirteen grandchildren, Tiffanie, Jason, Joseph, Joshua, Asher, Arabella “Bella”, John Oliver “Ollie”, Braven, Kingdom, Anya, Gabriel and Mitas. Elizabeth was blessed to have another grandchild on the way a little girl to be named Xyla Jean.

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her husband, Gary Lee Daughtrey and her parents, Faye & Wallace Moon.
