Hazel Marie Corbin, 94 passed away on April 18, 2018, at the Fowler Health Care Facility in Fowler, Colorado. She was born on September 13, 1923, to Floyd & Cora (Martin) Shoemaker in McClave, Colorado.
In 1929, Hazel and her family moved to Timpas, Colorado, where she met and married Nelson Corbin, Sr. on June 22, 1940. After several more moves, including a move to Taylor Township, Michigan, where their oldest son, Nelson, Jr. was born 3/30/1941, they moved back to Timpas. While living in Timpas, three more sons were born, Lee Gaylord 8/17/1942; Dale Albert 9/22/1944 and Jesse Allen 4/1/1946. In 1957, the Corbin family moved to La Junta, Colorado, which the family called home for many years. In 2011, Hazel moved to Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, for a short time before becoming a resident of the Fowler Health Care Facility in July of that year.
Hazel & Nelson, Sr. celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in June of 1990. Hazel's lifetime love left this earth on August 18, 1993. They had enjoyed 53 years together with their 4 boys, 11 grandchildren, and 19+ great-grandchildren. They loved playing cards, especially bridge, bowling, golf and traveling. Hazel continued to travel after Nelson's death to visit family in California, Las Vegas and Nebraska. She had worked alongside her husband while they had a general store in Timpas. Then drove the school bus when her sons came to school in La Junta and worked at Shull's Variety and Fabric Store for many years. She also taught her daughter-in-law’s and granddaughters how to cook, sew, iron and clean when they couldn't figure it out. She knew how to play all kinds of games and was willing and patient teacher of everything from bridge to golf. Even though she never had any daughters of her own, she had many that considered her their second mother.
Hazel is survived by her two sons, Nelson "Pete" (Linda) Corbin, Jr. of Cheyenne Wells, CO and Dale Albert (Jan) Corbin of Sugar City, CO; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great, great- granddaughters, numerous nieces and nephews. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sons, Lee and Jesse, her grandson, Danny, two sisters, Alberta Craig and Oma Griffitts, her brother, Dale Shoemaker.
