Listen to Obituary

Howard James “Jim” Davis, 92 of Winfield, Kansas formerly of La Junta, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 9, 2026, at the Kansas Veterans’ Home in Winfield, Kansas. He was born on October 31, 2026, in Lamar, Colorado, the beloved son of Lloyd A. Davis and Mary Roxie (Stephens) Davis.

A graduate of Wiley High School in 1951, he worked in farming for his father and various other jobs before moving to Denver, where he worked in a luggage factory. Jim went on to serve his country with distinction. Enlisting in the United States Air Force on April 29, 1953, he dedicated himself to the security service as a radio interceptor operator using Morse code. Jim served bravely during the Korean War, stationed in Japan, receiving an honorable discharge April 30, 1957, and continued his commitment to his country in the Air Force Reserves until April 1961. After his military service, Jim was employed as a salesman and delivery man for Wonder Bread (Hostess) in the Colorado Springs, Pueblo and La Junta areas. Later, he joined the Santa Fe Railroad, where he worked as a trackman and then a brakeman/conductor until his retirement on April 23, 1997. On September 16, 1956, in La Junta, Colorado, Jim married the love of his life, LaVerne Grasmick. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared a lifetime of treasured memories until LaVerne's passing on March 21, 2012.

Jim is survived by his loving family, daughter, Tammy (Davis) Trimble; son, Brian (Candy) Davis; daughters-in-law Jamie (Brad) Swartz and Sandra Davis. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Chad (Jess) Davis, Luke (Nikki) Davis, Tucker (Emily) Davis, Cole Davis, Seth (Sydney) Davis, Grace (Tyler) Buchanan, Taylor (Corey) Wright, and Chase Davis, as well as his great-grandchildren: McKenzie Davis, Addyson Davis, Knox Davis, Harper Davis, Weston Davis, Josiah Davis, and Sutton Wright.

Jim is preceded in death by his wife, LaVerne (Grasmick) Davis; his sons Steven and Glenn Davis; parents, Lloyd & Mary Roxie Davis; son-in-law, Larry Trimble; brother Richard Davis and sisters Ruth Fisher and Mildred Bryant.

Jim was a man of simple pleasures. He enjoyed sports, fishing, and the challenge and comradery of a good golf game. He had a passion for planting many flowers each spring and summer, maintaining a beautiful flower garden and an immaculate lawn. These drew lots of attention from passersby and friends who would look for him on his porch swing and honk hello. They would always get a friendly wave in return and an open invitation to stop for a visit. He loved country western music, dancing, his home, his friends and life.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held on August 15, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Perez-Peacock Funeral Home in La Junta, Colorado. The family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of one's choice in Jim's honor. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional staff at the Kansas Veterans' Home in Winfield, KS, and Good Shepherd Hospice for their humanity and compassion during his residency and final days. Jim Davis’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
