Listen to Obituary

Max M. Tafoya, 90, of La Junta, Colorado peacefully passed away Monday, March 16, 2026, at Bluestem Village in La Junta surrounded by his loving family. He was born Wednesday, January 22, 1936, in Higbee, Colorado to Simon Sr. & Teresa (Sandoval) Tafoya.

Max a longtime resident of La Junta, Colorado, was a loving husband to Ida Tafoya and a loving dad to Leonard, Howard, Mackey and Norma. He was a hard-working man and did many different things throughout his lifetime.

He worked for Santa Fe Railroad, Ranchers, Mechanic, carpenter and a roofer. He retired from Green Bay Foods. After retirement, you could always find him walking around downtown delivering Rocky Ford newspaper for exercise. He was also a devoted Green Bay Packer fan. If they were on, move out of his way — the TV was his.

He loved working on his driveway; he laid every brick from the front all the way to the back. He loved his garden — you name it, he could grow it. He was the breakfast maker of the house every morning, especially his pancakes. You would always catch him at all the tiger games especially track and field. He loved taking long rides out in the country reminiscing about his childhood, and we all loved to hear his stories — they were wonderful and great to hear, times with horse and buggies out in Higbee Valley as a young boy.

We will always remember you. Love and miss you, you will always be close to our hearts.

Max is survived by his children, Leonard (Isabel Alamos) Tafoya, Sr., Howard (Donna) Tafoya, Sr., Makey (Robbie Sisneros) Tafoya and Norma Tafoya all of La Junta, CO; grandchildren, Joshua Tafoya, Leonard Tafoya, Jr., Leann Veneklasen, Kristine Powers, Fahleena Tafoya, Howard Tafoya, Jr., Tanya Tafoya, Ashley Sisneros and Lucas Sisneros; twenty-three great-grandchildren; siblings, Simon Tafoya, Jr., Marina Tanner, Delores Tafoya, & Frances Martinez; numerous nieces & nephews also survive. He is preceded in death by his wife Marie Ida Tafoya; his parents, Simon Sr. & Teresa Tafoya; daughter-in-law, Patricia Tafoya; brothers, Leonard Tafoya, Tony Tafoya, Alex Tafoya, Ralph Tafoya, & Sam Tafoya; and sister Virginia Garcia.
