Nick Jimenez, Jr. age 65 was called to sing with the angels on October 22, 2023 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his death in Pueblo, CO at the Joni Fair Hospice House. Nick Jimenez, Jr., was born on August 14, 1958 to Nick, Sr. and Mildred (Perez) Jimenez at the Mennonite Hospital in La Junta, CO. He was the second child born of this union. Nick often remarked that although his actual name was Nicholas, he was affectionally known by many names, including Junior, JR, Kikie, and Pal but his favorite titles were Grampo, Dad, and Husband. Nick attended school K-12 at Cheraw Consolidated Schools and graduated with the class of 1977. He and his wife of 40 years, Cindy (Anderson) Jimenez, met while in middle school and began their life long relationship in the spring of 1977 and married February 11, 1983 in La Junta, CO. Nick liked to joke about while he and Cindy have been married 40 years, he should take credit for “time served” so at the time of his death Nick and Cindy had been a team for over 46 years. On his 25th birthday, Nick and Cindy were blessed with their first child, Nick Jimenez III and four years later with theirs second child, Quentin Jimenez.
After high school, Nick worked briefly at NIBCO Manufacturing in La Junta and in the fall of 1978, he moved to Alamosa to be near Cindy while she attended college. Nick took his first job in law enforcement at the age of 19 in December of 1978 as a dispatcher for Monte Vista Police Department and he found his passion. At the age of 21 he was sworn in as a Monte Vista Police Officer and in May 1981 he completed his POST training at Camp George West in Golden, CO. and continued to work for Monte Vista Police Department until 1986. Nick and Cindy returned to Cheraw, CO in 1986 and he began working as a Deputy for Otero County Sheriff’s Department. Nick’s LEO brothers and sisters often expressed that there was no better guy to watch your back than Nick.
Nick loved his family and he could always be found with his video camera on the sidelines, foul line or front row capturing his sons’ games or academic achievements. He loved kids and was always ready to lend a hand with anything to do with kids. He loved volunteering for the annual bike rodeo at Cheraw Community days. He was very proud that many of his sons’ friends called him “Dad” and chose to hang out at the Jimenez home. Nick served on the Cheraw School Board for one term. After leaving the Otero County Sheriff Department, Nick worked in the Juvenile Diversion program for the Probation Department of the 16th Judicial District, when this grant ended, he moved to working corrections at then CCA and later for the State of Colorado at Fort Lyon. During his employment at Fort Lyon, he was a member of the SORT and Tracking teams. As a member of the SORT team, he was called to intervene during a riot at one of the private prisons and for his service he was awarded the State of Colorado Medal of Valor from the Governor’s office. Nick would humbly say he didn’t think he did anything special, but would accept the honor. He retired early in 2013 due to health issues and dabbled in raising cattle because he had always enjoyed working with livestock and loved showing his grandkids what new calves he had for them to bottle feed.
Nick is preceded in death by his parents, Nick Sr. and Mildred Jimenez and his lifelong friend/brother/cousin, Ed Tabares, Sr. Nick is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Jimenez; sons, Nick III (Vennessia) Jimenez of Strasburg, CO and Quentin (Katrina) Jimenez of Northglenn, CO; three precious grandchildren, Nicholas Jimenez IV, Violet Jimenez and Oliver Jimenez; sisters, Lucille (Eli) Fresquez of Santa Fe, NM and Carolyn (Bob) Chavez of Henderson CO; brother, Michael Jimenez of Las Animas, CO; nieces, Kristy (David) Embly and Leah (Yahin) Villegas; nephews, Eil (Valerie) Fresquez, David Fresquez, Robert (Tanya) Ward, James (John) Ward, Colin Anderson and Bobby (Maxine) Chavez; brother-in-law, Cecil Anderson; sister-in-law, Pat (Jim) Robbins; numerous cousins, including Robert Tabares “Tbar” who he always thought of as a brother.
