Sandy was born on February 2, 1951, in La Junta, Colorado, to her mother Virgie (Damron) Clark and her father Delbert Clark. She was raised in the nearby small town of Olney Springs, Colorado—a quiet, close-knit community in Crowley County where the plains stretch wide and neighbors truly feel like family.
She grew up alongside her siblings: her older brother Darrell J. McDonald, and her younger sisters Connie Wilson and Berta Wilson. In that hardworking southeastern Colorado spirit, surrounded by family, she learned early on the value of care, commitment, and quiet strength. She attended Crowley County Schools and later earned her GED—a testament to her determination to keep growing, no matter the path.
That drive led her to Otero Junior College in La Junta, where she trained as a Nursing Assistant. She worked at the Crowley County Nursing Center.
But if you asked Sandy what mattered most, she would have told you without hesitation: her family. On April 1, 1969, she married the love of her life, John Kirk, and together they built a golden marriage that lasted 57 beautiful years. Fifty-seven years of shared laughter, support through every season, quiet evenings, and the kind of partnership that becomes rarer with time. Their home—wherever it was—was a place of warmth because of her. Sandy was a great homemaker in the truest sense: she created a space filled with love, home-cooked meals, traditions, and the steady rhythm of everyday joy.
As a mother, she raised two wonderful children—our David and Wanda—with the same devotion she gave to everything else. She was there for the milestones, the tough days, and the ordinary moments that make a life. And then came the grandchildren, whom she loved greatly and who brought an extra sparkle to her eyes.
Sandy enjoyed life. She found happiness in the simple things—the comfort of home, the company of family, the small pleasures that make a day good. She didn't need grand adventures; her greatest adventure was loving the people around her and being loved in return.
Today, we feel the ache of her absence deeply. But we also feel the gift of her presence in our lives. She taught us kindness costs nothing but means everything. She showed us that a long, faithful marriage is built one caring day at a time. She reminded us that family is the heart of it all.
Sandy, thank you—for the love you gave so freely, for the home you made so welcoming, for the care you offered to everyone lucky enough to know you. We will miss your smile, your gentle ways, and the way you made us all feel cherished.
Though you're no longer with us in body, your spirit lives on—in John's memories of 57 years by your side, in the hearts of her children, in the love of your grandchildren, and in every act of kindness we pass forward because of you.
Rest well, Sandy. You are loved beyond words, and you will be carried in our hearts forever.
Sandra is survived by her husband of 57 years, John Kirk of the Swink home; children, David Kirk of Colorado; Wanda Barret of Ordway, CO; grandchildren, Meranda Jackson, Rebecca Brisby, Tegan Kirk, & Daxton Kirk; 2 great-grandchildren; brother Darrell McDonald of Olney Springs, CO; sisters, Connie Wilson of Leota, KS & Berta Wilson of Olney Springs, CO. She is preceded in death by her parents.
