Summer Halal Phillips, 23, passed away on January 6, 2019 at her Florence home. She was born in La Junta on August 28, 1995 to David & Polly (Johnson) Phillips.
Summer attended home school K-12 with Good Shepherd Christian Academy, graduating at 17 years old. She played softball and volleyball for Swink High School. Then varsity volleyball for Florence High School. She was a Bible College graduate, three years in Teen Missions Bible Missionary & Work program, and she was currently working on her bachelor’s in Bible through Grand Canyon University online in Phoenix, Arizona. Summer loved Colorado, where she enjoyed camping, hiking, and watching the Colorado Rockies.
When she was 15, she began dedicating her summers to mission trips where she traveled to Peru (twice), St. Lucia, then lived 9 months in Malawi, Africa with Teen Missions International.
Summer is survived by her parents, David & Polly Phillips; sister, Faith; grandmother, Sally Johnson and numerous cousins in La Junta and aunts, uncles; grandparents, David (Carole) Phillips of Charlottesville, VA with aunts, uncles and cousins in Chicago, ILL and Lexington, KY. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jo Anna Phillips; grandfather, Walter Lavern Johnson and cousin, Elisabeth Anne Jacob.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church with Pastor Luke Canady of the Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Canon City officiating.
