Victor E. Hollar, 102, died in his sleep early on May 21st, in his home in Rocky Ford.
Vic was born on June 11, 1916 in Dodge City, Kansas to Frank and Clothilda (Rosel) Hollar. He was preceded in death by his first wife Laura (Speer), his parents, his siblings Margaret Hollar, Mary Varra and Richard Hollar, granddaughter Stephanie Marie Hollar, great-granddaughter Erica Burney and wife LaBerta (Ahlfeld). He is survived by his children Andy, Kitty Overmyer, Jim and Larry, as well as eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, Rhea (Oberlin) and several step-children and their families.
Vic met Laura Speer while obtaining a B.S. degree in agriculture at Colorado State University. They were married in Idaho in 1939. Their first three children were born in Iowa while Vic was getting his master’s degree in Horticulture. They moved to Rocky Ford in 1948 and bought the R.H. James seed company in 1950. Over the next 65 years Vic became known worldwide as a pioneer in the hybrid vegetable seed industry.
Besides his work at Hollar Seeds, Vic enjoyed cattle ranching and international travel.
Memorial service will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the
First United Methodist Church in Rocky Ford with Pastor Marty Lee officiating.
Family requests that in place of flowers a memorial may be made to the Arkansas Valley Hospice or the Methodist Church. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to hospice for its professional help.
